The recent takeover of Goma, the base of operation for Africa New Day in the DRC, by the M23 rebel group has marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. This development has not only heightened tensions between the DRC and neighboring Rwanda but also deepened the humanitarian crisis in the region. The M23, which includes the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), has been accused of receiving military support from Rwanda, a claim Rwanda denies. Timeline of Events
- Late January 2025: The M23 rebel group, backed by Rwanda according to some reports, begins its assault on Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. The city falls under rebel control, marking a strategic victory for the M23.
- January 27, 2025: A prison break occurs at Munzenze prison in Goma as M23 fighters enter the city. Reports indicate that over 100 female inmates were raped and burned alive by male inmates during the chaos.
- January 29, 2025: Residents of Goma express fear as gunshots and explosions continue, with numerous casualties reported. The city experiences severe disruptions, including looting and theft.
- January 31, 2025: The UN Human Rights Office highlights the growing human rights crisis in eastern DRC, documenting summary executions and conflict-related sexual violence.
- Early February 2025: The M23 declares a humanitarian ceasefire amid reports of renewed hostilities. The UN estimates over 900 fatalities and nearly 3,000 injuries since late January.
- February 2025: The DRC accuses Rwanda of supporting the M23, leading to diplomatic tensions. Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame denies knowledge of Rwandan troops in the DRC.
