Escalating Crisis in Eastern DRC

On Thursday, January 23, 2025 we received reports from the team in Goma, Eastern DRC that M23 rebels had increased their hostilities in the areas surrounding Goma and had captured Minova in South Kivu, a key town on the supply route to Goma. Unfortunately, the fighting continued over the weekend displacing more civilians, and has culminated in M23 claiming to have captured and taken control of Goma.

Key developments:

  • M23 fighters entered Goma early Monday morning amid heavy gunfire
  • Congolese government acknowledges M23 presence but hasn’t confirmed full control
  • Mass panic reported among Goma’s 2 million residents
  • UN peacekeepers have been killed and key Congolese leaders have been killed.
  • DRC government calls M23 advance a “declaration of war” and has started an assault on Rwanda.

The humanitarian situation is dire, with hundreds of thousands displaced and fleeing the city. International concerns are mounting as the conflict threatens to escalate further.

Our 200+ staff and over 2000 students are locked down in their homes with no running water, electricity or WiFi.

Esther Ntoto, founder of Africa New Day, has released a urgent video calling for prayer and action in response to this crisis. Watch now to learn how you can help those affected in Goma.
