School Trip to the Supermarket

At the UJN School, students are taught the national education curriculum in addition to lessons and leadership, entrepreneurship, music, and dance.

As we focus on the academics of educating our children, we also believe we can educate them on things in the community that will better prepare them as they grow up. Traditionally, food was purchased throughout the city, and local individuals operated individual outdoor booths in the markets. Also, small markets throughout the city carry other items needed to meet the community’s needs throughout the city.

In 2021 a major DR Congo supermarket, Kin Marche, opened its doors in Goma. Kin Marche is comparable to our western grocery stores and provides many hard-to-get items in a safe well stock environment.

The objective of this field trip was to allow the children to take what they have been taught in the classroom and experience it in the real world. The children learned the different things found in a supermarket, such as researching the shelves and making payment operations.

A total of 329 children took part in this trip. This activity was not an only discovery for the children but also for the educators who had never visited the supermarket. Several parents were grateful to see their children experience new things.

We are committed to holistically preparing our students for the future. We believe that every student is a leader. These future leaders learn how to lead, love, and serve confidently as they are prepared to become the solutions to issues faced by the families, their communities, and beyond.
