We’ve been shining light on the challenges of individuals working in cobalt mines. Today we want to bring light to the women having to participate in survival sex, who have no other option to keep existing from day to day. Africa New Day is working hard to create new options for these precious women. We’re giving women a space to share without judgment, providing counseling services, and then training them in a skill so they have another way to make money. But more on that in a moment.

We wanted to share with you a bit about cobalt mining in the DR Congo, the abysmal “modern-day slavery” conditions that exist in these mines, and what we can all do to help. Like with most things in the DRC, the history goes way back, and there are full books devoted to the cobalt crisis.

It has been ten months since the resurgence of the M23 rebel group and the repercussions are  still reverberating throughout Eastern Congo. We are grateful that, at present, the city of Goma and the close surrounding areas are not directly in conflict. However, reports of continued fighting with different rebel groups persist as the nation fights for the right to thrive and be free of the war.

In the first quarter of 2023 we had 1443 children in school

600+ children in displacement camps to be educated on-site and plans in place for reintegration into long term schooling. 

Over 15,000 displaced people served by our team. 

1848 men and women attended programs and training.

The hope was that it would be a temporary situation where the government and international community would bring the turmoil to a halt and life would return to normal. That children could attend school again, adults would return to work, and the rhythm of the community and the positive transformation of the people would continue.
